Why a Steam game is not available on Mac (and what you can do about it)
You open Steam on your Mac, find a game you own or want, and the Install button is greyed out. Or the store page says the game is not available on macOS. Or half your library looks faded and will not download. This is one of the most common frustrations for Mac players, and the cause is almost always the same: the game was only ever built for Windows.
Why Steam shows games that you cannot install on Mac
Steam is a store and a launcher. It does not convert games. Each developer decides which operating systems to build for, and ticks the matching boxes on the store page. If only the Windows box is ticked, the Mac version of Steam lists the game in your library but has nothing to download for macOS. That is why the Install button is greyed out, or why you see a message such as "This game is not available on your platform".
A large share of the Steam catalogue is Windows only. Building and maintaining a separate Mac version costs a studio real time and money, and many small teams skip it. Some older games had a Mac version that was later removed or never updated.
The Mac-specific reasons behind a greyed-out library
The game has no macOS build
This is the usual reason. Open the game's store page and scroll to the system requirements. If you see tabs for Windows only, there is no native Mac version. Your Steam library will show the game, but the Mac client cannot install it.
The Mac version is 32-bit
Apple removed support for 32-bit apps in macOS Catalina. Older Mac games that were never updated to 64-bit stopped launching, and Steam can no longer run them natively. Our guide on 32-bit games on Mac explains this in more detail.
Your Mac is too old or too new for the game
Some Mac builds require a minimum macOS version, or were built for Intel and stopped receiving updates. If the store page lists a Mac requirement that your system does not meet, Steam will refuse the install.
Regional or publisher restrictions
Occasionally a game is blocked in your region, or the publisher has delisted it. That is a different problem from a missing Mac build, and no Mac tool will change it. Check the store page for a region notice before assuming it is a platform issue.
How to check before you buy
- Open the game's store page in Steam or a browser.
- Look under System Requirements for a macOS tab. No tab means no native Mac build.
- Check the Steam reviews and community forum for Mac-specific complaints, since a tab can exist for a build that is broken.
- Look at the game's anti-cheat. Online games that use kernel-level anti-cheat often refuse to run on anything except Windows.
Options when a game has no Mac version
Run the Windows version of Steam on your Mac
Instead of using the Mac Steam client, you can run Valve's Windows Steam client inside a compatibility layer. Windows Steam then offers the Windows build of every game in your library, and the games run through translation. This is what MacPorter does. It is a Mac app for Apple silicon that installs the real Windows Steam client, using Wine for the Windows API, FEX-Emu to translate x86 code to arm64, and DXMT to turn Direct3D 11 into Metal. It does not use Rosetta 2, a virtual machine or a Windows licence. You sign in to Valve directly, and your existing library carries over, so nothing needs to be rebought. For the full walkthrough, see how to play Windows Steam games on Mac.
Use another compatibility tool or a virtual machine
CrossOver from CodeWeavers is a paid, Wine-based option. Parallels Desktop runs Windows 11 on Arm in a virtual machine and is sold as a subscription. Whisky was a free Wine wrapper, but development stopped in 2025. Apple's Game Porting Toolkit is a developer tool rather than a finished product for players. Check each vendor's site for current pricing. If you are weighing them up, we have a comparison of MacPorter and CrossOver.
Stream the game from the cloud
Services such as GeForce NOW run the game on a remote PC and stream the video to your Mac. This avoids compatibility problems entirely, but it needs a good internet connection, and which games are available depends on the service. MacPorter can suggest GeForce NOW for games that cannot run locally.
Honest limits
A compatibility layer is not a guarantee. MacPorter only works on Apple silicon Macs (M1 and later) running macOS 26 or later. Intel Macs are not supported. VR is not supported. Games with anti-cheat that blocks non-Windows systems will not work, and many competitive shooters fall into that group. MacPorter warns you before launching a game whose anti-cheat blocks it or whose publisher forbids it, so you do not find out halfway through a match. Our article on anti-cheat games on Mac covers this properly.
Performance and compatibility vary from game to game, and we do not promise that any particular title will run. The free 14-day trial exists so you can test your own games before paying. After that, MacPorter is a once-off licence priced in rand, sold through Yoco. It is not on the Mac App Store because App Store rules do not allow running downloaded Windows code, but it is notarised by Apple.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I install a Steam game on my Mac?
Almost always because the developer never released a macOS version. Check the system requirements on the store page. If Windows is the only tab, the Mac client has nothing to install.
Why is my Steam library greyed out on Mac?
Steam greys out games that are not available for the platform you are running it on. Those games usually still work if you run the Windows version of Steam instead.
Can I play a Windows-only Steam game on my Mac without Boot Camp?
On an Apple silicon Mac, yes in many cases. Boot Camp only ever worked on Intel Macs. A compatibility layer, a virtual machine or cloud streaming can all run Windows games, each with trade-offs. See running Windows games on Mac without Boot Camp.
Will every game in my library work?
No. Anti-cheat, VR and the way a particular game uses graphics and system features can all stop it from running. Try the trial with the games you care about most.
