Whisky alternative for Mac: what to use now
Whisky was a free Wine wrapper that let many Mac users run Windows programs and games without touching the command line. Its development stopped in 2025. If you searched for "Whisky app discontinued" or a "Whisky Mac alternative", this page explains what that means for you and what your options are.
Is the Whisky app discontinued?
Development of Whisky stopped in 2025. That does not mean the app vanished from your Mac. If you already have it installed, it may keep opening and running your existing bottles for now. The risk is the longer term. Without new releases, it will not follow changes in macOS, and it will not pick up newer compatibility work from the Wine and graphics projects it relied on. Each macOS update makes it a little more likely that something breaks.
For anyone who relied on it just to play Steam games, that is a good reason to look at a replacement before you are forced to.
What Whisky actually did
Whisky wrapped Wine, the open-source Windows compatibility layer, in a friendly Mac interface. You made "bottles" (separate Windows environments), installed programs into them and launched them. If you want a plain explanation of the underlying technology, read what Wine is on a Mac and Apple's Game Porting Toolkit explained.
It was a general tool. You could use it for Steam, other launchers or standalone Windows programs. That flexibility is also why it could take some manual fiddling to get a particular game going.
Alternatives to Whisky on Mac
MacPorter
MacPorter is narrower than Whisky. It installs Valve's real Windows Steam client and runs your Windows games from it. The engine uses Wine, FEX-Emu to translate x86 and x86-64 code to arm64, and DXMT to turn Direct3D 11 into Metal, all built for arm64. It does not use Rosetta 2 and does not run a virtual machine.
- Setup is drag to Applications, then open. It installs the engine, creates the Windows environment and runs Steam's installer. On an M2 this took about 45 seconds.
- Steam and each game appear as their own Mac apps, with Dock icons, app switcher entries and a menu bar.
- You sign in to Valve directly. MacPorter never sees your password, and your existing library is used as it is.
- It is not free. It is a once-off licence priced in rand, sold through Yoco, with a 14-day free trial.
If you only ever used Whisky for Steam, this is the closest fit. If you used it for other Windows programs, MacPorter is not a general replacement.
CrossOver
CrossOver, from CodeWeavers, is a paid Wine-based product that covers a wider range of Windows software. Check their site for current pricing. We compare the two directly in MacPorter vs CrossOver.
Apple's Game Porting Toolkit
This is a developer tool from Apple, not a ready-made player. It is useful if you are comfortable with Terminal and want to experiment, but it needs more work than a packaged app.
A Windows virtual machine
Parallels Desktop runs a full copy of Windows 11 on Arm. It handles non-game Windows software well, but it is a subscription and you need a Windows licence. See MacPorter vs Parallels Desktop for how it compares.
Cloud streaming
GeForce NOW streams games from a remote machine, so nothing needs to run locally. It suits games that cannot run on a Mac at all, though it depends on your connection and the games available in the service.
Is there a free Wine wrapper for Mac?
Whisky was the best-known free one, and it is no longer being developed. Other free routes exist, such as building Wine yourself or using Apple's Game Porting Toolkit directly. These are workable if you enjoy tinkering, but they are not point-and-click. MacPorter is not free, but the 14-day trial lets you try it with your own library before paying anything.
Limits you should know about
- MacPorter needs an Apple silicon Mac (M1 or later) running macOS 26 or newer. Intel Macs are not supported.
- Anti-cheat is a hard wall for many games. Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye and kernel-level anti-cheat often block non-Windows systems, or the publisher forbids them. MacPorter warns you before launching such a game. More in anti-cheat games on Mac.
- VR is not supported.
- We do not promise that any particular game will run. Compatibility varies by game and by Mac.
Moving over from Whisky
If your games live in Steam, the move is simple. Your purchases belong to your Steam account, not to the wrapper. Install a replacement, sign in to Valve and re-download the games you want. Saves held in Steam Cloud come back with the download. Saves stored only inside an old Whisky bottle will not, so copy those out before you delete anything.
Also keep in mind that MacPorter is not affiliated with Valve, and Steam is a trademark of Valve Corporation.
Frequently asked questions
Why was Whisky discontinued?
Development stopped in 2025. We do not speak for its maintainers, so check the project's own pages if you want their explanation.
Will Whisky still work on my Mac?
An existing install may keep working for now. Over time it is likely to fall behind macOS changes, since it no longer receives updates.
What is the best Whisky alternative for Steam games?
For Steam specifically, MacPorter is built for that single job. For a mix of Windows programs, CrossOver or a virtual machine may fit better.
Do I need Rosetta 2 or Windows to use MacPorter?
No. MacPorter does not use Rosetta 2, and it needs no Windows licence.
